Draft, not yet in effect

The highlighted note marks the one detail still to confirm, and a short review by a lawyer comes before launch. Not legal advice.

Miranda is a service from Solentric, a brand of Elemodo Software LLC, run by Ryan and Scott in St. Louis, Missouri. To confirm: our mailing address (the PO Box). Miranda finds local businesses whose websites have fallen behind, builds each one a new website from its own public content, and mails the owner a postcard showing it. This policy explains what we collect to do that, what we do with it, and how to make us stop.

The short version

  • We only read what anyone can see: public business listings and the business's own public website.
  • A computer drafts each design with Claude, an AI from Anthropic, and one of us reviews every design before anything is mailed.
  • We never sell information and never use it for advertising.
  • One step stops all mail, no account needed: miranda.solentric.com/stop.

What we collect about businesses

Public listings. We start from open data about places published by the Overture Maps Foundation: a business's name, category, street address, phone number and website.

The business's public website. We visit the home page and up to four more pages, the way an ordinary browser would, and we follow the site's robots.txt rules. We keep screenshots on a desktop and a phone, the text, the photos and logo we might reuse, technical signs of the site's age, speed and accessibility, and the credit naming who built the site, when it shows one. We only read pages any visitor can see. We never sign in, fill in forms or buy anything.

Photos with people in them. A business's website may show its staff or customers. We only reuse photos from the business's own site, in a design shown to that business. If you are in one of those photos and want it left out, contact us and we will take it out.

How we use AI

We send the listing, the website's text, photos and screenshots to Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic, for three jobs: rating how dated a website looks, writing the plan for the new website, and checking that every claim in the new website is backed by the business's own site. The new website is built from our own set of designs and never uses facts, reviews, prices or photos that are not the business's own. One of us reviews every design before a postcard is printed.

Once an owner has claimed their website, Claude also reads the messages they send us in the app, with any photos, to tell a question from a change and to draft the changes they ask for. One of us reviews every change before the owner sees it.

Anthropic handles this information for us under its commercial terms, which say it may not train its models on what we send.

Postcards

We send the business's name and mailing address, with the card's artwork, to PostGrid, which checks the address, prints the card and mails it. Each card has its own short link and QR code, so we can tell which card was opened.

When someone opens a card's page

We record that the card's page was opened, when, and whether it came from the QR code or the typed link. We do not record who opened it. We count visits to our pages with Fathom Analytics, which uses no cookies and does not identify visitors. Like every website, our servers keep short-lived logs that include IP addresses and browser types, which we use to keep the service running and secure.

When an owner claims their website

Claiming asks for your name and email address. We email you a 6-digit code to prove the address is yours, then create your account. When you use the app, we keep a log of requests and the devices you sign in from, for security. We use cookies only to keep you signed in and to protect our forms, never for advertising. If you later subscribe, Stripe handles your card and payments, and we never see your full card number.

In the app you can write to us, send photos and book a call. We keep your messages and photos with your account. Booking a call asks for a number to call you on and an optional note, and we email you a calendar invitation for it.

When someone asks us to stop

We keep the business's name and street address on a do-not-contact list, and check every card against it before it is made and again before it is sent. We cancel any card not yet sent and take down the website we made. We keep that one entry so we keep honouring the request: deleting it would let the business be mailed again.

Who else handles this information

Only the companies that run parts of Miranda for us, each for that job alone:

  • Amazon Web Services, which hosts our servers and files and sends our email.
  • Laravel Forge, which manages our servers.
  • Anthropic, for the AI work described above.
  • PostGrid, which prints and mails the postcards.
  • Stripe, for payments, once an owner subscribes.
  • Honeybadger, which tells us when something breaks, and may see details of the request that broke.
  • Fathom Analytics, which counts page visits without cookies.

We do not sell or rent information to anyone. We share it otherwise only if the law requires us to.

How long we keep it

  • A design nobody claims comes down 60 days after its card is mailed, with the screenshots, photos and text we read from the business's site.
  • Counts of cards opened and claimed are kept to measure how Miranda is doing. They do not say who opened a card.
  • An owner's account, website, messages and photos are kept while the account is open. When an account closes, we delete them 90 days later. We keep only the billing records the tax laws require.
  • The do-not-contact list is kept for good, as explained above.

Your choices

Stop all mail at any time at miranda.solentric.com/stop, with the code on your card or your street address. To see, correct or delete what we hold about you or your business, email help@solentric.com or call Scott at (618) 401-2699. We answer within 30 days. Depending on where you live, you may have more rights under laws such as California's, and we honour them the same way.

Children

Miranda is for businesses. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13.

Changes to this policy

When this policy changes, we update the date at the top. If a change matters to owners with an account, we email them before it takes effect.
